When the calendar turned to 2017, the aggregate value of all cryptocurrencies combined was a mere $17.7 billion -- and bitcoin made up well over 80% of this value at one point. However, as of Dec. 14, the total cryptocurrency market cap had soared to $515 billion. For you math-phobic people, that's a return of more than 2,800%. For investors who've held throughout the entirety of this volatile year, they've possibly seen a lifetime's worth of gains.
Ethereum ($ETH) Adds the benefit of smart contracts, which cannot be censored, fraudualent or interference with, by a third party. Smart contracts can be used to to store and transfer value without a middleman.

Neo ($NEO) Originally Antshare, which was lost in translation. Is basically Ethereum 2.0 and its direct competitor, with the ability to perform more transactions per hour and open to multiplie programming languages.

Golem ($GNT) Defined as Airbnb for computers. The Golem Project allows users to rent out their unused CPU/GPU capabilities through cloud computing systems for rewards.
